Trainee Oral and E-Poster Prizes

Trainee oral and e-poster prizes are only open to Australasian Trainees registered in the RCPA College training program.

Abstracts of original research are invited for the following prestigious Trainee Prizes for Pathology Update.

 

ABSTRACT DEADLINE: NOW CLOSED (THURSDAY 16 NOVEMBER 2023)
  • Submission will be acknowledged by email receipt when lodged correctly. If you don’t receive this acknowledgment please contact Rachel Johnson.
  • Successfully shortlisted Trainees will be notified by: Friday 1 December 2023
  • Shortlisted Trainees for the oral prizes are not required to submit an e-poster.
  • Email acceptance must be saved by the author for any CPD requirements as the RCPA does not keep copies of acceptance emails.

  • All accepted abstracts must be accompanied by a full registration by the early bird cut-off date of: Thursday 1 February 2024 (Please note, you do not need to email a copy of your registration receipt, all registrations will be confirmed through the College booking system. Please only notify Rachel Johnson if the registration is in the name of a co-author and not the submitting author) Abstracts without a paid registration will be withdrawn.
  • Trainees entering multiple prize categories (DS Nelson, QAP, BEA, Perinatal or Roche) are not permitted to submit the same abstract under different prize categories. A different abstract is required for each prize.
  • Duplicate abstracts cannot be accepted. Abstracts accepted as Trainee case presentations as part of the call for Trainee oral presentations as part of the Scientific Program listed cannot also be presented in the prize categories.
  • Please note that poster and/or oral presentations are a requirement for Anatomical, Chemical and Microbiology Trainees and recommended for all other disciplines (Haematology, Immunopathology, Forensic Pathology and Genetic Pathology).
  • E-Posters will be on display onsite at Pathology Update via Trainee e-poster kiosks, and also available via the Pathology Update conference app. Delegates are not required to present or stand by their posters during Pathology Update.
  • Trainees may enter the Roche Scientific E-Poster Display if they have been unsuccessful in pre-selection for the below prizes.
  • Those selected will have their abstract published in the supplement to the Journal Pathology.
  • Please note that the judging for the prizes will take place at the presentations. Trainees who are not present will not be considered.
  • Trainees selected to present onsite will receive complimentary registration for the day they are presenting (Friday or Saturday) and reduced rate registration to attend the remainder of Pathology Update (No travel and accommodation entitlements).

The DS Nelson Trainee Oral Prize for the best oral presentation of original research is awarded in honour of the late Professor David Selwyn Nelson, a distinguished pathologist and editor of Pathology from 1985 to 1988. It is a eight-minute PowerPoint presentation with two minutes available for questions. The DS Nelson is the flagship Trainee prize and three Trainees from any discipline will be shortlisted from abstracts to present.

Prize: Winner $2,000 AUD with $500 AUD to the Runner-up

The RCPA QAP Prizes are applied for as one category and the top two shortlisted abstracts ranked by the judging panel will be offered to present in the oral prize, the next three ranked abstracts will be offered to present in the poster prize.

The RCPA Quality Assurance Program (QAP) Oral PriZe

RCPA Quality Assurance Programs Oral Prize follows immediately after the DS Nelson presentations and together these oral presentations form one event. Two Trainees will be selected from abstracts to present their PowerPoint talk on a subject related to laboratory management, case studies and all aspects of Quality Assurance. The best oral presentation wins a $2000AUD cash prize.

The RCPA Quality Assurance Program (QAP) E-Poster PriZe

The Quality Assurance Program E-poster Prize will follow the Board of Education and Assessment E-poster Prize on the Saturday morning. Three Trainees will be selected from abstracts to present their QAP E-poster. A prize of $1000 AUD will be given for the best E-poster presentation on a Quality Assurance topic.

The Board of Education and Assessment (BEA) Trainee E-poster Prize is for the best E-poster presentation of original research by a Trainee in any discipline. Trainees are given the opportunity to summarise their E-posters in three minutes followed by three minutes for questions. Four Trainees will be selected from abstracts to enter this prize with E-posters displayed at Pathology Update.

The RCPA has been contracted by the Department of Health and Aged Care to increase the Perinatal Pathologists’ professional capacity and capability to undertake stillbirth autopsies and investigations and ensuring these services are available for bereaved parents who choose to access them.

To assist with the promotion of Perinatal Pathology as a career choice, the Stillbirth Investigations – Pathologists Project will be awarding prizes for the best abstract and e-poster by either an Anatomical, Forensic, Genetic or General Pathology Trainee which highlights the vital work of Perinatal Pathologists and why every Trainee should consider a career in Perinatal Pathology.

This award is only open to Australian based Trainees.
