Digital Microscopy

General Information

The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) with the support of the Australian Government Department of Health Specialist Training Program (STP) has developed this Digital Microscopy Education and Training Manual (DMM). This manual is based on The RCPA Guidelines for Digital Microscopy in Anatomical Pathology and Cytology October 2015

DMM contains training modules covering:

  • Technical Specifications
  • Image Processing
  • Communication and Networks
  • Privacy, Confidentiality and Security
  • Quality and Compliance
  • Professional Practice Training and Competency

The RCPA recognises the rapid advances being made in the field of digital microscopy. The RCPA Part 1 Small Biopsy Exam in Anatomical Pathology is now digital microscopy based, and there are many educational programs and modules on the RCPA website utilising whole slide images (WSI).
There is also a requirement within laboratories using this technology to ensure safe implementation for diagnostic and quality purposes.
