Normal and Benign Changes

Squamous – normal, inflammatory, atrophy

The appearance of non-neoplastic squamous cells in LBC preparations differs little from that in CP. Nuclear shape and size remain consistent in benign repair and nucleoli are present and uniform. In atrophy, parabasal cells may appear singly while basal cells present in flat sheets.

Endocervical – normal, inflammatory, atrophy

As with squamous cells, the appearance of benign endocervical cells in LBC preparations differs little from that seen in CP. Because of the different slide preparation method, SP slides may contain more large groups of endocervical cells than TP however smaller groups and strips as well as single cells are represented well in LBC preparations. Reactive endocervical cells show enlarged nuclei with vesicular chromatin and prominent nucleoli and cytoplasmic vacuolation may be more clearly seen than in CP.

Endometrial - normal, benign

Endometrial cells in LBC preparations may appear as three-dimensional groups instead of the flattened and folded sheets seen in CP. Nuclei are small and kidney-shaped and chromocentres may appear more prominent. Epithelial and stromal cells can be differentiated.
