Appropriate Tests

 

The diagnosis is usually apparent from history of contact and the distribution of lesions.

Skin biopsy may be required if the diagnosis is obscure.

Patch testing with suspected substances identifies the responsible contactant.

Metal sensitivity, especially

  • Nickel

 

Occupational dermatitis, including

  • Aldehydes, including glutaraldehyde
  • Plastics monomers
  • Latex allergy

 

Plant dermatitis, including

  • Grevillea (Robyn Gordon type)
  • Rhus tree
  • Poison ivy

 

Skin sensitising medications

  • Sun screens
  • Insect repellents
