Clinical diagnosis; testing rarely indicated.

For recurrent or disseminated infection (to exclude herpes simplex): vesicle fluid, ulcer scrapings - Virus detection.

Shingles

 

Congenital varicella

 

Disseminated herpes zoster

 

Meningoencephalitis
