Pericardial aspiration is usually diagnostic: pericardial fluid - cytology, protein, microscopy and culture; Pericardial biopsy is occasionally helpful.

Pericarditis

 

Haemopericardium

 

Malignancy, especially

  • Metastatic carcinoma
  • Lymphoma
  • Mesothelioma

 

Cardiac failure (severe)

 

Hypoalbuminaemia

 

Myxoedema
