Causes

Appropriate Tests

 

Acute onset of encephalopathy, hepatic failure and renal impairment. Bilirubin, Alanine aminotransferase, Aspartate aminotransferase, Glucose; Creatinine, Urea, Electrolytes, Ammonia; Blood gas arterial; Full blood count.

Viral illness, especially

  • Influenza B infection
  • Varicella zoster infection

Particularly in association with aspirin use.

  • Hyperammonaemia
  • Organic acidaemias
  • Fatty acid β-oxidation defects
