Appropriate Tests

 

For recurrent or disseminated infection (to exclude herpes simplex): vesicle fluid, ulcer scrapings - Virus detection (NAA).

Serology to determine immune status (ie in pregnant patients exposed to varicella). See Varicella zoster Ab.

Shingles

 

Chicken pox (varicella)

 

Congenital varicella

 

Disseminated herpes zoster

 

Meningoencephalitis
