Method dependent. Typically 200 - 290 µmol/L.
This test has a very limited role in monitoring Diabetes mellitus except in people with a Haemoglobinopathy; assessing control of blood glucose over the preceding 1-3 weeks.
Increased values suggest significant persistent Hyperglycaemia.
Levels are lower in the presence of hypoalbuminaemia.
The clinical utility of this test is limited and assay of glycated haemoglobin is generally preferred, see HbA1c, unless the patient has a haemoglobinopathy.
