Application:

Diagnosis of Goodpasture syndrome. Assessment of rapidly progressive Glomerulonephritis.

Interpretation:

The presence of glomerular basement membrane antibodies are moderately predictive of Goodpasture syndrome; but the definitive diagnosis of Goodpasture syndrome requires renal biopsy with IF.

Glomerular basement membrane (anti GBM) antibody is a rare autoimmune disorder with circulating antibodies directed against an antigen (alpha-3 chain of type IV collagen) normally present in the GBM and alveolar basement membrane. The combination of of glomerulonephritis and pulmonary haemorrhageis referred to as Goodpasture’s syndrome.
