Bacterial culture, NAAT testing.
To detect nasal carriage of bacteria, especially Staphylococcus aureus during an outbreak of staphylococcal infection.
To detect whooping cough (Bordetella species) by NAAT.
Viral detection by NAAT (influenza, COVID, RSV, and many others).
Not useful for diagnosis of infection, unless a direct swab of draining abscess.
Presence of Staphylococcus aureus on several occasions reflects carrier state.
Presence of Bordetella species with a compatible clinical illness confirms whooping cough.
Respiratory virus detection see specific organisms (i.e. influenza, RSV, COVID).
