Collagen binding assay

Keywords: von Willebrand, Collagen Binding Assay, CBA, VWF:CB

Specimen:

3mL blood (adult) or 1mL blood (paediatric) in citrate tube. Check with laboratory.

Method:

Immunoassay (EIA; ELISA) or chemiluminescence (CLIA) with measure of binding of von Willebrand factor to collagen-coated microtitre plates (ELISA) or magnetic particles (CLIA). Abbreviated VWF:CB.

Reference Interval:

Refer to the laboratory.

Generally 50-200% of the level in pooled normal plasma (guide only).

Often reported as U/dL.

Application:

Additional functional VWF complementary to the platelet glycoprotein Ib binding assays such as the ristocetin cofactor assay in the investigation of a possible bleeding disorder, diagnosis of von Willebrand disease and its variant forms.

See von Willebrand factor activity, Ristocetin cofactor [VWF:RCo], VWF:GPIbR, VWF:GPIbM and von Willebrand factor multimer.

Interpretation:

Generally performed in conjunction with other tests and not performed or interpreted in isolation.

See also von Willebrand disease testing; von Willebrand factor Ag, VWF:RCo, VWF:GPIbR, and VWF:GPIbM.
