Faculty of Science
Established in 2009, the RCPA Faculty of Science was founded to train and develop a career path for senior Scientists working within the field of Pathology. The Faculty has four pathways to Fellowship; by Examination, by Published Works (Research), by Scientific Achievement, and by Pathology Informatics.
The Fellowship by Examination pathway involves a laboratory-based training program, devised in conjunction with employers and supervisors that will allow the Trainee to develop competency to the standard defined by the Faculty training program and detailed in the curriculum. There is a strong emphasis on research, leadership and innovation embedded within the training program.
The Fellowship by Published Works is for professionals who have outstanding research expertise in science and pathology. The standard expected for Fellowship is likely to be reached only with authorship of at least 30 Peer reviewed publications.
The Fellowship by Scientific Achievement is for medical and dental Fellows of the College in recognition of scientific achievement in research, innovation, development and leadership.
The Fellowship by Pathology Informatics recognises those who are at the forefront of this discipline, placing a strong emphasis on information technology standards, management & innovation and research.
In 2011, 299 founding Fellows were grandfathered into Fellowship via a strict peer review process.
In addition to developing a career path for scientists, the Faculty of Science aims to:
- Formalise and extend the training provided by scientists to RCPA pathology trainees
- Harness the expertise of scientists in the development of policy and expert opinion by RCPA
- Develop a forum of pathologists and scientists that will foster research
