Queensland Microbiology Registrar Training

Appointments to the Queensland Microbiology Training Programme are co-ordinated by the Medical Support Unit, Pathology Queensland in conjunction with Pathology Queensland’s State Director of Microbiology.

There are currently 8 training positions across these laboratories. Typically there can be up to 3 vacancies per year.
Eligibility Criteria
The holder of this position must have an MBBS or equivalent qualification and be registrable with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). The incumbent must become a registered trainee with the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia.
Applications from overseas trained doctors without FULL AMC accreditation will not be considered.
Applications from overseas trained specialists who are not residing in Australia with a valid working visa will not be considered.
It is a Queensland Health requirement that all Australian and New Zealand citizens and applicants with permanent residency who are eligible for appointment be offered positions before those with temporary visas.
Key Skill Requirements/Competencies
- Demonstrated academic achievement and interest in pathology.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as a team member and to relate successfully with other staff at all levels.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both spoken and written English, including formal and informal presentation of scientific, teaching or clinical material.
- Ability, interest and willingness to participate in the teaching of pathology and in research.
- An understanding of the concepts of a client focused service, and of the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement.

Positions for all pathology disciplines are advertised through the Queensland Health RMO Campaign at http://www.health.qld.gov.au/rmo/default.asp and on the RCPA website.
The RMO Campaign opens in mid June and closes in mid July.
Application for a training position must be completed online at the above Queensland Health website.
The Selection Process
Applicants who do not meet the eligibility criteria will not be further considered.
Applications and referee reports from all eligible applicants with be evaluated based on the selection criteria, and a short list will be created.
Interviews are usually held in August.
Applicants who are offered an interview will be notified by phone and email at least a week before the interviews.
Applicants are encouraged to attend the interview in person.
The Interview
The Central Director, Microbiology, Pathology Queensland, Dr Michael Thomas organises interviews after the short listing process is completed.
Applicants will need to supply 2 referee reports.
Successful Applicants
Offers of training positions are e-mailed shortly after the interviews and letters of appointment are made to successful applicants by the Medical Support Unit, Pathology Queensland usually by early October.
Unsuccessful Applicants
Unsuccessful applicants will be notified by the RMO Campaign. Applicants may submit a request for feedback to michael.thomas8@health.qld.gov.au
Subsequent Years
All Microbiology Registrars will have to reapply prior to appointment for each training year.
